Amtrak Susquehanna River Rail Bridge
The Amtrak Susquehanna River Rail Bridge (SRB) Project replaces the existing 118 year old two-track bridge with two new, fixed-span, two-track bridges over the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville, Maryland. The project aims to improve rail connectivity and maintain future rail services. The new bridges will support passenger and freight trains, and the project will also modernize five miles of track, signals, and catenary.
The project's goals include:
Increasing capacity: The new bridges will increase passenger rail capacity from two tracks to four.
Improving safety: The project will eliminate conflicts with maritime traffic and improve safety and navigation for waterway users.
Improving reliability: The project will improve reliability and trip times, with a higher maximum speed of 160 mph for trains.
Improving navigation: The project will improve the navigation channel for marine users.
Supporting economic growth: The project is expected to support the region's economic growth.
The project will also include replacing piers and abutments, redesigning approaches and interlockings, installing new embankments and retaining walls, and realigning the track. The project is subject to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 and other applicable laws and regulations. Amtrak is also working with the community through briefings, meetings, and a community engagement program to keep stakeholders informed and involved.
Our team is anticipated to complete the preconstruction phase in 2024 with construction beginning in 2025. The team is providing constructability reviews, quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and schedule development.
