Fenwick Island Bridge 3-437 Replacement, DE
DelDOT selected ICE Teams for another high-profile bridge replacement project connecting Shelbyville, Delaware to Fenwick Island on the southernmost, coastal region of the state. The bridge on Lighthouse Road is heavily trafficked in the peak summer season carrying beachgoers and vacationers to the island. Multiple challenges and restrictions concerning right of way limits, utilities across the bay, and strict traffic restrictions made this project a prime candidate for the CMGC process. The team is evaluating multiple methods to replace the bridge. A bridge “slide”, a “half-and-half” phased construction, a “bridge blitz,” and even a pick and set approach where the bridge is built off site and replaced in sections are amongst the top contenders.
The CMGC team has their work cut out for them. The quick design progression along with the limited space available to replace this structure, and the publicity of this spotlighted project will surely make this project another success story for ICE Teams and the CMGC team assembled by DelDOT. ICE Teams provided independent cost estimating, construction scheduling, risk management, and constructability reviews.
