North Allston Storm Drain Extension Project; Harvard University

CMGC Private Owner Harvard University. $60 million Storm Drain Improvement Project winding through parts of the campus and impacted a MassDOT off-ramp, Soldier Field Road, and a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility. Installed 3,000 LF of 8x12 concrete box culvert with associated outfalls, hazardous material remediation, utility and roadway relocation/replacement. Required 82 project (phases or shifts) steps to get across Soldier Field Road. All excavation spoils where highly contaminated and required careful remediation to be hauled out of state to an approved facility. Numerous project stakeholders and agencies to coordinate with and get approvals from.

The service provided by ICE Teams included independent cost estimating, construction scheduling, risk management, innovation tracking (cost and time savings), participated in task force workshops, and provided constructability reviews. Coordination across agencies from a private owner’s perspective was extremely challenging and the project team worked together seamlessly to communicate the project progression concisely to get approvals quickly and efficiently while managing the huge hazardous materials risk.
